For students entering in Fall 2019

These requirements apply to all students enrolling in on-campus degree programs at the School of Law. This includes JD, LLM, and SJD degrees. There are separate computer requirements for the online MSL degree and certificate programs.

Minimum Requirements

Students are required to have a laptop computer that meets the following requirements:

  • Supported operating system (see below)
  • Memory: 4 GB minimum
  • Storage: 120 GB minimum
  • Wireless: Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac)
  • Webcam

Supported Operating Systems:

  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 10  *S mode is not supported
  • macOS Mojave (10.14)

If you have a Windows 10 computer that is running in S mode, you can switch out of S mode. Many computers running older versions of macOS can upgrade to macOS Mojave (10.14) at no charge.

Laptop computers running Windows 10 S, Windows 10 Single Language Edition with a non-english language, versions of Windows older than 8.1, versions of macOS older than macOS Mojave (10.14), and Chrome OS (Chromebooks) do not meet the minimum requirements.

Tablets running iPadOS, iOS, and Android do not satisfy the laptop requirement. Tablet-style computers (such as a Microsoft Surface) must run a supported operating system.

You must have administrator privileges on the laptop and virtualization software may not be used to run the operating system.

Support is not available for computers that do not have a licensed copy of the operating system.

While students may use any laptop computer that meets the minimum requirements, students who plan to purchase a computer are encouraged to consider Apple or Dell. Discounts are available on purchases from these vendors.

Wake Forest University is an authorized service provider for Apple and Dell. There is no charge for warranty repairs. Charges for parts and labor apply if the computer is not under warranty or is damaged.
