For students entering in Fall 2021

These requirements apply to all students enrolling in on-campus degree programs at the School of Law. This includes JD, LLM, and SJD degrees. There are separate computer requirements for the online MSL degree and certificate programs.

Minimum Requirements

Students are required to have a laptop computer that meets the following requirements:

  • Supported operating system (see below)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 (equivalent, or greater) or Apple M-series
ARM-based processors are not supported on Windows computers
  • Memory: 8 GB or greater
  • Storage: 256 GB or greater
  • Wi-Fi
  • Microphone
  • Webcam

Supported Operating Systems:

  • Windows 10  *S mode is not supported
Windows 11 is supported as of December 16, 2021  *S mode is not supported

  • macOS Big Sur (11.0+)
macOS Monterey (12.0+) is supported as of December 16, 2021

If you have a Windows computer that is running in S mode, you can switch out of S mode. Many computers running older versions of macOS can upgrade to macOS Big Sur (11.0) at no charge.

Laptop computers running Windows 10 S, Windows 10 Single Language Edition with a non-english language, versions of Windows older than Windows 10, versions of macOS older than macOS Big Sur (11.0), and Chrome OS (Chromebooks) do not meet the minimum requirements.

Tablets running iPadOS, iOS, and Android do not satisfy the laptop requirement. Tablet-style computers (such as a Microsoft Surface) must run a supported operating system and can not have an ARM-based processor.

You must have administrator privileges on the laptop and virtualization software may not be used to run the operating system. Amazon WorkSpaces and similar cloud-based desktop virtualization services are not supported.

Support is not available for computers that do not have a licensed copy of the operating system.

WakeWare

While students may use any laptop computer that meets the minimum requirements, students who plan to purchase a computer are encouraged to consider purchasing an Apple or Lenovo computer through the WakeWare program. These competitively priced computers meet or exceed the minimum requirements. Since Wake Forest University is an authorized service provider for Apple and Lenovo, any necessary repairs can be handled conveniently on-campus.
